Our Matt did like the tense PvP aspect in our Hunt: Showdown review, particularly the moment of claiming the big baddie’s bounty then fleeing, pursued....
But one thing I haven’t stopped thinking about is the menu sounds. NieR Replicant has excellent noises for its start menu and inventory management, both of which aided that sense of being transported to another world of monsters and emotion. I know I keep bringing this game up whenever I get the chance, but the original Dark Souls has strong menu noises. Select something from a menu and it’ll ring out with this loud “dhhnng” sound....

They’ve also sketched out a new demo to tide us over, and I’ve enjoyed my little poke at it. Inkulinati’s combat sees you defend a drawing of your character by inking in various beasts inspired by actual monstrosities you’ll find in medieval manuscripts. When I say monstrosities, think less Lovecraftian tentacle horrors and more ‘rabbits jousting atop human-headed snails’. There’s a campaign where you traipse through different encounters, sometimes fending off wild animals and sometimes going quill to quill with rival Inkulinati who have the same magical marginalia powers that you do....
It Takes Two is a really fun co-op game, sort of Borrowers-meets-couple’s-counselling where a pair of imminently-to-divorce parents are transformed into little toy versions of themselves and split-screen platform around their home and garden. In almost every level, Cody and May (that’s them, that’s the names of the characters) have something different to do, so it never really gets old. There’s grappling, swinging, shooting, giant squirrels, giant wasps, giant spiders - lot of giant versions of regular stuff; you get it....
Once again, Jackbox have made more party games that broadly involve doing writing or drawing in response to prompts - decided partially by skill but also, y’know, being funny. Blather ‘Round has you vaguely describe things for people to guess. Talking Points is a team game where one player has to give a speech assisted by an assistant queuing up slides you have not seen before. Champ’d Up has players draw characters to fight over unlikely titles....

Kena: Bridge Of Sprits is familiar third-person action game fare for the most part. Bow and staff wielding spirit guide Kena uses her unlockable magic abilities to battle gaggles of forest-y enemies along her journey with a bit of light puzzling and climbing too. The biggest spirits she has to fight are the main course, of course. They’re longer encounters against angry dead folks that her posse of Pikmin-like little Rot companions help her tackle with special skills like stunning enemies or hammering them with Rot power....
When asked whether players would be able to befriend NPCs like other Stardew-likes, Frame Break’s CEO Joakim Hedström told us: “In short, yes. We don’t have a full town like Stardew, but the characters that are there, you’ll be able to get to know better and learn their stories.” Alas, Hedström didn’t expand on whether those friendships and stories would lead to romantic partnerships at all, but hey, at least we can look forward to some purely platonic pals at the very least....
In the old version of ME1, you could carry over a max of 100,000 credits (depending on how much you had) to ME2 by importing your save. But the remaster changed that, allowing players to keep 10% of the credits they collected instead. Seems fair at first, right? Well, if you complete almost every mission and sidequest in ME1, it’s surprisingly easy to max out your credits at 9,999,999. This left completionists (like me) with a cool million credits at the start of the second game, (I’m loaded)....
This is pretty much the plot of the next MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries DLC, Legend Of The Kestrel Lancers. It’s arriving on September 23rd alongside a free update that will finally let players punch other mechs in the face. The developers at Piranha Games tell me that they received a lot of feedback from players who wanted to participate in more of the major events in the Battletech universe. So, Legend Of The Kestrel Lancers plonks you into the Fourth Succession War, in which leaders of the Lyran Commonwealth and Federated Suns factions get married and start a big old conquest to nab all the planets separating their realms....
Metro Exodus had a bit of an awkward start to life, as initially it was meant to come to Steam at launch. People had pre-ordered it and everything before publishers Deep Silver suddenly declared it an Epic exclusive just two weeks before launch. It looks like it will actually make it to Steam this time though, and it arrives just after its next DLC comes out on February 11th. The DLC is called Sam’s Story, and you’ll be able to play that as well as the older expansion, The Two Colonels and fill up your time with some old and new Metro goodness....
