Apparently I played Dark Forces II so much, and at around the right age, that these and other noises just occasionally enter my mind without any warning. I’ll be sitting quietly drinking my cuppa, and suddenly I’ll hear the bubbly electric drawl of Force Healing yourself in a moment of need. Other times I might be drifting off to sleep, and I’ll be abruptly assaulted by the maniacal laughter of Boc the Crude....
It has multiple endings, depending on your choices (and some reflexes, although it’s not very demanding). I was always fond of picking up all the humans, pulling them around a bit, then plopping them safely back down again. If you go swimming here the beast might wave you around a bit. It’s just a thing that happens, don’t worry about it. I like that you’re stimulated into this new awareness and curiosity by the pretty colours of some balloons....
You probably couldn’t call Control underrated, but I never felt its combat specifically got the respect it deserves. While you have a gun, and a button to crouch behind walls, it’s only really a shooter until a floppy disk gives you telekinesis and a TV lets you fly. From there, the fights – and there are a lot of them – become fully three-dimensional ballets of breathless mid-air evasives and increasingly desperate furniture-flinging....
The game itself looks like it was dredged from the bad end of the 1980s, complete with horrific, grindingly atonal sound effects, and a version of medieval belter Pastime With Good Company, that somehow sounds even better after being hauled through the depths of chiptune hell. You play as an extremely basic sprite of a king, lurching jerkily and square by square through a world populated by courtiers, peasants, and one extremely aggressive bear....
It was very fulfilling to piece together something so beautiful and functional. But what I remember most about it wasn’t the end result. It was the feeling of those wooden pieces snapping perfectly together. Like most people, I’m drawn to tactile things, and the right combination of texture, sound, and resistance can invoke a surprising emotional reaction in me. Opus Magnum is a puzzle game about building alchemy engines. Each level is played upon a hexagonal grid, and your aim is to turn a certain element or molecule into a certain other element or molecule....
On paper, open-world horror doesn’t seem to make any sense. Horror games are scary because the control is firmly in the hands of the game you’re playing. You merely react to what’s being inflicted upon you, and it’s this lack of control that makes things so scary. The Evil Within 2 manages to nail an open horror structure so well that I’m surprised more devs haven’t tried it since. By offering up a small selection of locales, each telling its own self-contained slice of horror, players can tackle them in any order....

Set during the late Edo period, Like A Dragon: Ishin!’s protagonist is real historical samurai Sakamoto Ryōma. It otherwise follows a similar structure to other Yakuza games, with melee combat (albeit with more swordplay) against large groups of goons being broken up by exploring an open world town (albeit with less pinball and fewer J-Pop idols). With Ishin on the way, and if indications of an imminent PC announcement for Judgment and Lost Judgment are true, I think there are only a handful of Yakuza things not on PC....

I think that it is, secretly, what Burnsy wants to do, even though it conflicts with their feeling of duty. But they are such a poetic soul, and they dream so much of the surface....

I play Fallout 76 much as I do all of Bethesda’s Oblivilout games (note to self: Oblivious Lout should be a character class): by ignoring everything that I don’t care about. I mostly walk around, pretending the world is as dangerous as it looks, and not one in which you can shrug off dozens of bullets if the person firing them has the wrong number over their head....

So gun ’em down, grab the XP gems spilling out their guts, level up, choose perks, and explore paths of daft combos while you explore the woods.
