Everything you place is randomly selected, but you’re free to skip past anything you don’t like....
There’s an almost Townscaper-like magic to the way structures seemed to be dragged out from one another, towers connecting with walls, piers stretching to become lighthouses, lighthouses expanding to become manmade islands. It makes conceptual sense of the name. What I can’t discern is the consequences of those building decisions, and this isn’t a pure toy like Townscaper. “Design-Develop-Defend”, says the description, and the closing moments of the trailer show boats, airships, and missiles being launched at dragons....
As Sin pointed out during E3, Carto’s been plotting a course for some time now. Today, the cutesy puzzler finished charting its route through to a full release. Separated from her gran, the eponymous Carto finds herself stranded in a hostile (if frightfully pretty) wilderness spanning vast plains, biting glaciers and sand-torn deserts. Fortunately, our lead has some truly seismic map-shifting powers, and is able to move and rotate tiles beneath her to form entirely new landmasses....

Despite its big, chunky picture book veneer, this top-down adventure game strikes hard at what it actually means to be creative, celebrating its joyous and fulfilling highs while also tackling its (sometimes literally) monstrous lows, including imposter syndrome, burn-out, depression and more. It’s very much a story first, game second kind of tale, but as with Wandersong before it, its winsome cast, sensitive story-telling and infectious soundtrack go a long way in papering over its somewhat limited mechanical toolset....
That also explains all the newness you should expect. In short: it’s still an arcade-y RTS telling wonderfully silly stories, but now it’s all shiny. The Covert Ops, Counterstrike, and Aftermath expansions are included, along with the bonus Spec Ops missions from PlayStation version of C&C. I do like that the singleplayer will have the option to switch between new and old styles at will. The new art is fine but I am a hoary old purist when it comes to preserving a game’s look....
