If the keep falls, it’s game over. Pretty standard stuff, then, but what sets ORX apart is the random chaos of its ‘build-by-card-tile’ approach. Roads, farms, villages and castle walls must all be laid down one tile at a time on its map of isometric squares, and they’ve all got to be touching a card you’ve put down previously, too....

It’s rather fabulous - part Agatha Christie-esque farce, part intricate 2D puzzle game where you spin a lot of plates. Kanezaka is a lovely-looking Japanese village placed just below Hanamura (the assault map that also features in one of the game’s animated shorts), and there’s a cat café! From the shots shown in the dev update below, you can spy Hanamura castle peeking out over the walls of Kanezaka. It seems we’ll be fighting in the streets, as well as in a noodle bar, arcades and, importantly, a cat café (in which all the cat pictures are drawings of the developers actual pets, aww)....
In either case, Patron feels worthy of further patronage. It came out a week ago and there’s a demo available. You can guess at most of what you do in the game by looking at a screenshot. You place buildings, you advance through a tech tree, you try to keep everyone fed, and you try to stockpile enough food that your citizens don’t starve when winter comes. It’s the social simulation that interests me most....
