How Video Games Consistently Fail Gandhi

Gandhi has long appeared as a leader in the long-running strategy series Civilization, although they’re by no means his only video game credit (take, for example, the 80s Amiga game Nuclear War). They treat his pacifism as a handicap, which is understandable given how focused they are on war, but blinkered nonetheless. Gandhi’s pacifism wasn’t a restriction, nor is it defined by what it is not. It was a system unto itself and one that proved effective....

I Hate To Admit It But I Wish Halo Infinite Had A Battle Royale Mode

I now know the reason why and I hate to admit it. Infinite doesn’t have a battle royale mode, which I’ve come to realise is the perfect FPS template for gaming with my mates. Something about it just works, you know? Listen, let me explain. Does Halo Infinite need a battle royale mode? Absolutely not. But would I support one? Absolutely. It’s hard not to imagine Infinite’s take on one: an enormous playground stitched together from some of Halo’s most iconic maps of yore; Warthogs and Mongooses roaming the lands; players racing to the M41 SPNKR as it spawns; grappling to a rooftop and laying down covering fire; some contrived reason as to why there’s a circle of poison gas closing in… but hey, rings are what Halo does best, right?...

I Hope Jurassic World Evolution 2 Will Just Let Me Build A Nice Peaceful Dino Park

Let’s get what’s already been established out of the way first. As Jurassic World Evolution 2’s director Rich Newbold revealed during the PC Gaming Show and Future Games Show, the game will be set after the events of the latest film, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. At this point in the franchise’s plot, all the dinosaurs have escaped from Professor Shitstorm’s mansion in California after a black market auction got a little bit snarly, and they’re now going completely bonkers in the woods and that....

I Queued For 45 Minutes Outside Hitman 3 S Berlin Club

Berlin is Hitman 3’s best level. The pathway to the industrial warehouse turned hedonistic wonderland is the sort of lead-up you’d expect to end in a gothic manse, more Castlevania than Kraftwerk. Blackbirds circle overhead, the music is ominous, and a pale light beckons 47 forward. When you reach the club, it’s part underworld allegory, part subversion of the Hitman formula, and part just IO Interactive showing off. Before all that though, 47 has to indulge in some of the utter mundanity the series does so well; it’s time to join the queue....

I Want More Games To Redefine What Survival Means

I can barely survive my actual life when that includes sitting in a nice warm flat eating roasted, salted cashews from a bag that was sealed by a huge and complex robot the size of a warehouse, that was created specifically for the bagging and sealing of roasted, salted cashews. So pretending that I would, if I got stranded on an island or survived an apocalypse, be at all capable of doing anything other than lie down and wait for death to come to me is pure power fantasy....

I Want More Of She Dreams Elsewhere And I Want It Now

I’ve played only the demo so far, roughly an hour long, but I’m ready to go all in. I am quite excited about She Dreams Elsewhere. “This is me trying” is a very familiar moment. It works like a JRPG, let’s get that out there. I almost never get on with those, but its plot moves quickly enough, its combat avoids enough grind, and its characters are well drawn enough to pull it out of that mire....

I Will Play Broken Roads Purely For Its Brilliant Moral Compass

It was a screenshot of a fairly traditional RPG dialogue scene, with a panel at the bottom displaying all the possible dialogue options for the player. But what caught my eye was an unusual radial graphic on the right-hand side of the options. Reading on, I discovered that Broken Roads uses a rather unique Moral Compass, one which plots your overall moral stance towards the world and its people with a golden arc....

Iconic Internet Monster Scp 173 Is Losing Its Look

The SCP Foundation appears to be the private files of a vast and secret organisation dedicated to discovering, studying, and containing supernatural threats. The wiki is a catalogue of reports documenting oddities, describing their characteristics and efforts to contain them: a cave leading to an alternate reality where all life ended 2016, a coffee machine able to dispense any liquid, an animate pool of notblood, a bloodthirsty book rewriting the world as it rewrites the history of a lost civilisation, a deadly prank show, and hundreds more....

Id Software S Demo For Mario 3 On Pc Is Now In A Museum

The demo build came as a bit of a surprise, Museum Of Play’s digital games curator Andrew Borman tells Ars Technica. Apparently it was tucked in with a bunch of other donations from a developer who hadn’t actually worked on the Mario 3 port demo. Borman was able to play the demo himself after imaging the floppy disk it was donated on, including Id’s version of Mario 3 level 1-4, which had yet to be seen....

Jiushark S Tower Style Ssd Cooler Looks Silly But Heralds Some Toasty Pcie 5 0 Drives

Except, in the not-so-distant future, there’s a chance that active SSD cooling won’t seem so excessive at all. That’s because PCIe 5.0 drives are coming and, while they’re set to outpace even the best SSDs that use the current-gen PCIe 4.0 interface, it sounds like such speed will come at the cost of higher temperatures. And, in turn, a higher risk of throttling. Right now, the M.2-Three is largely unnecessary, if not impossible to fit in certain PC setups....

Ken Wong S Visual Novel Florence Comes To Pc Next Week

“At 25, Florence Yeoh feels a little stuck. Her life is an endless routine of work, sleep, and spending too much time on social media,” the blurb says. “Then one day, she meets a cello player named Krish who changes everything about how she sees the world.” The game was well-received when it first came out for mobile in 2018, being praised by some for the love story’s subtlety and handling of deeper themes....

Kingdoms Of Amalur Remaster Gets First Gameplay Trailer

Oh hey look, here comes the first so-called “gameplay trailer” for Kingdoms Of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, which might look a fair bit like another World Of Warcraft-esque MMORPG but is actually a singleplayer game. That could be neat! So, it’s an action-focused RPG set in a big open fantasy world with quests and stabbing and loot aplenty and a kinda generic vibe? Seems like a game that one future time traveller’s review might call “generous but uninspired”....

Loop Hero Taps Into The Deepest Parts Of Rpg History

Today, RPGs are more focused on the impact of narrative choice, with games like Mass Effect lauded for their spiderweb-like branching points. It’s a trend taken to its limit by Disco Elysium, which trades traditional combat for sharp exchanges and insults. Still, the classical dungeon crawler lives on through Dark Souls, Diablo, and now a curious little auto-battler called Loop Hero. Developed by a small Russian indie studio called Four Quarters, Loop Hero has rapidly become a hit, trailing only the breakout survival hit Valheim on Steam’s bestseller lists....

Lost Ark Gets A Straight Performance Boost With Directx 11 Surprising No One

DX11 doesn’t make Lost Ark look better in any other way, but a frame rate boost is a frame rate boost. Back on the DX9-only review build, equipping my test PC with a humble GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and running the Very High preset at 1080p produced a 73fps average, but on the public DX11 version this jumped to 87fps. That’s an extra 19% FPS, for free. Switching to my recommended settings of Very High with Indirect Shadows, Distortion Effect and Motion Blur all switched off, Lost Ark could also pump out an 114fps average on DX11....
