A brave and curious viking by the name of “HotGUUUUU” spent an entire evening building a colossal mega-ramp. A titanic chute high above the mountains that they’d use as a longboat launchpad, which would not only let them glide gracefully in the air for a while, but also get them out to sea a bit quicker than usual. I mean, who actually has time to sail, you know? Firstly, I am in awe of the sheer velocity the longboat gains when hurtling down the mega-ramp....

Squeenix announced Valkyrie Elysium back in March during one of Sony’s State Of Play streams. It’ll be the first in the long-running Valkyrie Profile series to reach PC, and like its forebears will be drawing heavily from Norse mythology to tell its tale of biffing monsters and fighting against the oncoming Ragnarok. Unlike those earlier Valkyrie Profile games, though, which were largely turn-based tactics RPGs made by Tri-Ace, new developer Soleil Inc have morphed Elysium into a real-time hack and slasher, which you can see more of in the new trailer above....

Astra’s abilities all revolve around placing stars around a map. At any point during a match, she can enter her Astral Form. Similarly to when Omen enters his shadow-y place, this allows Astra to see the entire map and pop down up to five stars wherever she’d like. Once placed, she has three abilities that she can use to create different effects on the stars. Nebula makes a smoke that can block enemy sightlines and provide cover, Gravity Well sucks enemies in and causes a small explosion that makes them vulnerable, and Nova Pulse concusses players in a small area around the blast....

And having sampled a couple of Vampire Survivor-likes, it’s made me appreciative of the game’s visual clarity. Yes, things can get messy, but at least you’re able to make out what’s happening on screen. I don’t think it’s something the subgenre has quite grasped yet. When Steam Next Fest was a thing, I tried out a Survivors-like called Extremely Powerful Capybaras which is as you’d expect: you play as a capybara who must survive against hordes of enemies....

They’re weird little things, one and all, but yeah I’d definitely want to protect their goofy little selves....

The version of Chicory that Lobanov eventually settled on (and the one you’ll be able to play later on today, June 10th) is a top-down adventure game about a dog called Pizza with a magical paintbrush. Having played the first couple of hours, it looks to be every bit as sincere and characterful as Lobanov’s earlier work. As well as being able to paint the town red (or, indeed, any colour you like) with big, satisfying blobs of your mouse-controlled brush, you’ll be solving puzzles, helping your animal friends, finding lots of hats, and restoring the world of Picnic Province to its former glory....

The new map for Warzone is out now, so today I (metaphorically) return to the front gates of their offices with a new proposal. It’s about time Warzone had a radio station, or like, War Tracks I can actually buy, or even Spotify integration. I have popped my message onto one of those wind up toys that races forwards if you pull back and let go. I’m sure it’ll reach them this time, I can feel it....

So: come watch us celebrate 20 years of Deus Ex. Or, more likely, stumble through the opening tutorial like two drunk uncles at the aforementioned birthday party. Colm has not played the game, and I haven’t returned to it since release. I was terrible at it at the time, too. I remember reading Kieron’s review on PC Gamer - because who didn’t? - and being desperate to play this game that reinvented itself with every avenue of approach....

I have been playing Neon White lately—so very much Neon White—and I am enjoying the near-terrifying degree of control I have over my movement and momentum while in the air....

An end credits song Video games have a lot of music but not many songs. Instrumentals, chorals, and orchestrals are nice and all, but a song with lyrics can give a real kick. And I’m delighted when video games choose to end with a bang by whacking a song over the end credits. They’re rare, but many of the ones we hear are crackers. A little touch to perfect the ending....

Fruits Before video games were corrupted by the pursuit of filthy lucre, all anyone wanted was the healthy snack and big points offered by fruits. Cherries! Bananas! Oranges! Apples! Pears! A video game wasn’t a video game if your character didn’t scoff an entire fruit salad every level, earning all sorts of points and abilities with every munch. I respect it greatly. It was all downhill after the introduction of the coin....

Cameras which actually take pictures If a video game lets me use a camera which ostensibly takes photos, it should actually take pictures and save them for me to see. How wonderful that ghost-hunting game Phasmophobia will save your spooky snaps, so you can prove that ghosties are real (or show your pals their mangled corpses). How delightful that the Yakuza games which have cameras will send you away with holiday snaps of your bewildered beefy boys....

I only have an insistence that some future game star the best characters in Star Wars: cute critters and silly robots who make good noises. I would also accept a Baby Yoda Tamagochi. In all honesty, I think the limit on the potential of Star Wars games will be Star Wars fans. They’re just not willing to allow anything different or challenging, wanting only to sup upon the lukewarm pap of nostalgia....
